MEET THE INTERNS

Emily Baumgarten
Emily is a senior at the University of Southern California, theater major studying acting, dance, singing and directing. She enjoys running, traveling, and hiking. Being a CEI pushes her to put herself out there to form bonds and connect with other students by engaging in stimulating conversations. Last winter break she had the opportunity to go with Hillel of USC to Israel on Birthright. After this amazing experience she began to work at Hillel as a birthright intern and worked to keep the Birthright group connected after the trip. Since then she has been more comfortable reaching out and forming friendships based on common interests and shared experiences.

Joshua Faskowitz
Josh is a collector of sorts.  From a young age he has taken the idea of gather stuffs to great extents.   It started with Hot Wheels –with a car collection that featured many cars of the imaginary flight variety.  Then came Legos, and Pokemon galore, soon to be followed by a baseball card collection that could wrap about the moon if each card was laid end to end.  In high school, Josh collected volunteer hours.  Today, Josh continues his righteous mission.  He currently collects interests.  Josh thought it would be cool to collect a whole bunch of interests, such as postmodern literature, DJing, global economics, Soviet governance, computational aesthetics, fantasy football, contemporary art, puns, and fine hybrid cheeses.   But it is time for Josh to grow up.  Collecting is for children.  Although grown-ups still collect in a sense, but they don’t call it collecting—they call it networking.  So join Josh, as he ‘networks’ around USC (essentially collecting relationships/people/names/food).   He is really stoked to network as part of CEI, since it is sort of his life-long thang.

Jason Finkelstein
As people around the world were celebrating the arrival of 1993, little did they know they’d soon have another reason to be joyous. Just 1 hour and 21 minutes later, at 1:21 AM, a smiling baby boy was born in San Francisco, California. He was raised in the sunny East Bay where he spent his youth playing baseball, which culminated in a Little League 1-hitter, and eagerly devouring Jewish knowledge at Bet Sefer Avraham, his synagogue’s Hebrew School. Soon after truly  becoming a man at his Bar-Mitzvah, Jason moved on to Oakland Technical High School where an exceptional project won him first prize at the California State Fair for Solid Model Rendering, a truly life-altering experience. His “Jewish Journey,” so to speak, continued with membership in BBYO, a teen-led, international youth group. After being lucky enough to get an acceptance letter to the University of Southern California, Jason become the first student from his high school to attend. He is currently majoring in International Relations and Cognitive Science. Jason loves long walks and deep talks, but according to sources close to him his true passion lies in helping others connect with their Judaism. He’s incredibly grateful to Hillel for providing him with this opportunity through its CEI program.

Katelyn Masket
Katelyn is a sophomore from Thousand Oaks, CA double majoring in International Relations and Economics. This summer through USC she traveled to the Arctic region to conduct IR research on environmental issues and indigenous populations in the area. On campus Katelyn is a member of Trojan Pride, the Teaching International Relations Program, Alpha Delta Pi, and WYSE mentoring program. In addition, she is thrilled to be working as a CEI intern for USC Hillel during the upcoming year because she cannot wait to meet students from diverse communities within USC as well as try to connect them to programs, initiatives, and other students, all of which can enrich their time as a Trojan.

Stephen Siegel
Stephen is a junior majoring in Economics/Mathematics and minoring in Accounting.  He’s the president of USC’s Club Baseball team and a recovering chocoholic.  Besides spreading the word of the Torah, he also tries to recruit people to join him in the Paleo diet.  Despite the claims of many fellow CEIs that they will join him, officially zero of them have entered his wonderful world of ground beef and vegetables.  He’s excited to get Jewish students active in the Greek community involved in exploring their Jewish identity.
